Pages - iWork
Pages is the Macintosh word processing program. It is essentially designed like Microsoft's word, but it's definitely an Apple product. I use Pages to make 80% of all the guides I make, and then export them into Microsoft's (Word) and Adobe's (PDF) format.
Pages is available through the iWork package, the Mac App store, and the iTunes App store for iOS devices. If you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod, you can get pages.

Word - Microsoft Office
Most of you probably have Microsoft's Word. In transferring from Pages to Word, there are some changes to the layout and look, so I only recommend to download in Word if you plan to edit the file on your computer. I'm unaware of any portable program that Word runs on, but it comes with all PC computers.
It's available through multiple providers (Office Max, Best Buy, ect.)

PDF - Adobe
Every computer can open PDF files. They are basically images that take a "screen shot" of the file. Printers use them (PDF stands for Portable Document Format) to print anything you send to them. Because a lot of the charts I make get kinda messed up in the exporting process, I recommend this file type if you're only going to print it out and study it. It also opens more readily on portable devices.

Word - Microsoft Office for Mac
You might be wondering what this is, but this is Microsoft Word, for Macintosh. I have the 2008 version, but it's basically Word that works on a Mac. I don't really use it because it doesn't make the charts look as pretty as Pages does, but many people like it. If you're a new Mac user, I think I'd recommend the Office for Mac. You'd be more familiar in transitioning to it.
